#removing #apps from your #mac

March 17th 2011 in Random Thoughts

Many times when you think you’ve removed an application, some files associated with that application still linger on your computer. Recently I had some woes with a divx plugin for firefox, but as many people find out, that’s not the only software who’s uninstaller is lacking. You can use this method as a general uninstall

The general way people remove applications from their macs are either by using an application like AppCleaner or by deleting the app, and usually the slightly savvier user may even delete the preferences. But you still didn’t get all the lingering files associated with the app!

If you’re a neat freak like me, there is yet one more thing you can do to take it a step further. Open the Macintosh HD (or whatever you renamed it – a friend of mine used to name his hard drive Big Mac), and put in your search keyword(s) in the spotlight box. Most likely nothing will have shown up…until you make sure tweak your search criteria.

Make sure you click on File name in the search bar, then click the plus sign all the way to the right. Drop down the menu for “Kind”, select other, and add System Files. Now when you search you will be able to click on Kind, and to the right of that select “are included”. Now your search will dig deeper and find all kinds of “goodies”.

Cheers!
