clingy #divx extensions in #firefox for #Mac OS
I’ve recently had a bout with some very clingy extensions for #Firefox. Specifically the #Divx plugins on my #Mac. They would not uninstall. No matter how many times I tried disabling or uninstalling, they would just come back, and FF would proudly announce that two new plugins have been installed. I searched the web in vain. Found other people complaining about the same thing. The divxlabs forums had a posting by a staff member from December, promising a solution soon. So I kept digging. Either Firefox or the actual installer obfuscates the names of the extensions when they get installed in your browser. The browser keeps track of where they are, so normally you can just uninstall them by clicking the pretty oval button in the add-on manager. The only way to truly identify them is to look in each folder in the extensions folder ofr your profile, either Globally or Locally. In my case, the DivX plugins turned out to be Global extensions. The file that identifies what extension is in the current folder is called install.rdf. This file, when opened has all kinds of XML formatted information on the extension. What you want to look for is a tag called em:name, which is followed by the extension name. Finding this however, was a little more difficult. The key was to tweak #Spotlight a little bit. I had to add System files in the search options. Once I did this, I found the folder to be in /Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/blah blah/blah blah (where blah blah are a set of weird looking hexadecimal numbers). They you just close FF, perform the aformentioned investigation, and trash the folders with those preferences. When you launch FF again…poof! They’re gone!
